So, before using any herbal supplements, it is important to know the benefits of herbal supplements for health.

What are Herbal Supplements?

Herbal supplements are a major type of dietary supplement, which contains some parts of plants or herb plants. The aim of that included herbs plants is to use it for its scent, flavor or for therapeutic purposes. Leaves, roots, seeds, fruit, bark, stems and roots from widely used plants can be used alone or mixed together to yield a different outcome. These days there are various herbal supplements for health available out there in the market. A botanical or herb is a plant or a part of plant that is used for its scent, flavor and therapeutic effects.

Are Herbal Supplements Safe?

It’s the burning question of today, and many people want to know the answer. Manufacturers of herbal supplements are responsible for making sure that the claims they make for their products are not false or misleading. However, these manufacturers are not required to submit this information and evidence to the FDA. So, be a smart consumer and do not solely rely on these products… be objective in your research. And although the FDA has certain rules and regulations for herbal products, they do not ask manufacturers to get their herbal products approved before marketing it to consumers. It is important to know that just because many herbal products are “natural” they are not always safe. There are some herbs that are known for having serious health damaging side effects that are known to cause serious liver damage. So do the research before using herbal supplements for health benefits.

Herbal supplements act the same way as other allopathic drugs. There are numerous plants that are used for the treatment of various diseases and medical conditions. Again, always follow labeled instructions, recommendations and suggestions from your doctor and/or pharmacist before taking herbal supplements. With that said, lets have a look at some health benefits of herbal supplements:

  • Milk Thistle is known to lower the liver inflammation in children undergoing extensive chemotherapy
  • Ginkgo is known to improve memory and is used in Alzheimer’s disease
  • Rose Hips are a good source of vitamin C
  • Garlic has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties
  • Ginger is supposed to have anti emetic properties and is used in vomiting and nausea
  • Kava is used for anxiety disorders, but potential side effect of liver damage
  • Herbal teas like jasmine mint have anti-oxidants and are known to shed extra body fat
  • Evening Primrose Oil is beneficial in PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and eczema, but no scientific proof
  • Star Flower is associated with relieving joint stiffness and pain
  • The Bromelain plant is used to reduce inflammation and indigestion
  • Celery Seed is used to treat arthritis, cold and conditions of the spleen and liver
  • Quercetin contain anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties
  • Rosemary is used for improving memory, relieving muscle pain and supporting digestion   


  1. I for one may not deny that all herbal supplements are safe for us but I can say with complete authority and without any doubt that Ginkgo is surely a keeper. It has worked wonders for my memory which used to suck before. It has time and again proven its track record and is the most popular memory enhancing supplement in the world. And since you have mentioned the great Gingko, I will think of trying some of the other herbal supplements too which you listed.

  2. I have been considering health supplements for my health for a short while now, since I’m slowly edging my way towards 40 years old lol.

    This is a great article, and there definitely seems to be many benefits where herbal supplements are concerned.

    My short term memory doesn’t seem to be great these days, but it sounds like Ginkgo can help me there.

      Ginkgo is great for short term memory loss… personally I use Rosemary for memory improvement, in addition to relieve muscle pain and help with digestion. Seems like as you get older it’s almost imperative to start exploring these options.

    This is an area that has been of great interest to me recently. Largely because of the general perception that if it’s herbal, then we presume that it’s safe. Like you say, herbal medicine has been around for thousands of years and safely practiced in many cultures.
    I do wonder however, about the effectiveness of some of these herbal tablets. If a certain herb provides a person benefits towards an ailment, what’s to say that taking it in tablet form will be as beneficial. The herb extract may not work so well as taking the herb in its natural form.
    What do you think? Are herbs as effective in tablet form?

      What a great question… based on my research, I discovered that the greatest therapeutic benefit is conducive to taking the herbs in the form that best captures and preserves their active ingredients.

The use of herbal drugs has bee on controversy for a very long time.This makes people fear to use them.though they are not available in all the countries it hurts when some body is guided to use herbal treatment and at the end of it the condition does not disappear and ends up back in a hospital setup!There,the doctor still says there is no cure for your illness!Thanks for sharing

      I don’t think people should rely on herbal products alone… most herbal products should be used as a supplements depending upon one’s condition.

  6. I’ve been interested in herbs ever since I took St John’s Wort years ago because I was feeling depressed. It worked wonders actually. I was on it for years, and never in a rush to come off it because it felt so good and seemed to have no side effects. The only problem was that I was perhaps too happy sometimes and people would comment that I smiled all the time.

    The thing about herbs is that they contain many compounds that can have a synergistic effect together. Compare that with a prescribed drug, which is a high dose of just one chemical. It’s no contest really.

  7. I love to use herbal produts because they are natural and as far as I know they don’t have any side effects. In todays world many people are moving away from those other product and getting more involved with herbal products and that is a smart move.
