Synapses connect the millions and millions of neurons in the brain with the help of the active chemicals called as neurotransmitters. These chemicals are secreted by neuron at the presynaptic junction, binds and acts on the receptors of postsynaptic junction of the other neuron to transmit messages downstream. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main and active component of marijuana change the way of transmission of signals by altering the strength of signals also interrupts the normal communication between the neurons at the synapses. In other words, THC either mimics or blocks the transmission signals at synapses.

Inhaling marijuana smoke let THC to enter to enter the brain in the matter of seconds and acts of specific receptors called as cannabinoid receptors, expressed in some areas of brain greater than others are. These areas includes

Due to the selective nature of distribution of receptor sites, areas specific signs and symptoms are seen after using marijuana. Hippocampus located in the temporal lobe of the brain and it is associated with short-term memory, so it alters the recollection of recent events prior to use of marijuana. When it acts on the brain, it affects the coordination between the body parts. To summarize it causes following physical and mental disabilities:

- Problem solving
Besides these short-term effects, long term consumption of marijuana can leads to many chronic problems such as chronic cough, phlegm, frequent chest infections, symptoms of chronic bronchitis etc. also it increases the risk of lung cancer, psychosis, decreased IQ etc.
There is huge debate whether it should be legalized or not. Although, many states in the US already legalize the use of marijuana. Due to its potent analgesic properties, it is used in many diseases to relieve pain when conventional analgesics failed to relieve the distress of the patients. The arguments about legalizing medical marijuana are on the peak, and with such strength of feeling on both sides of the argument; it can be difficult to get a clear perspective.
Arguments often given against to legalize marijuana are:
- Marijuana may act as a doorway drug to other more dangerous drugs.
- Hike in the crime rates are seen.
- It makes the drug easily available to children.
- It is associated with lung cancer
- It is associated with several psychiatric illnesses
In addition, those are in favor are:
- It is a potent analgesic (painkiller), effective in nociceptive pain in cancer patients.
- It has medicinal properties.
- Some researches shows it enhance the creativity.
- In some areas where marijuana is legal, it decreases the use of other dangerous drugs.
